  What Is The EyeBag?

The MGDRx EyeBag is a patented, CE marked Class 1 medical device registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The EyeBag is a silk and suedex device which can be re-heated up to 200 times in a microwave. Simply heat for 30 or 40 seconds on full power and the EyeBag will stay warm for up to 10 minutes.

Conditions which usually benefit from regular twice daily EyeBag treatment are:

* Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
* Blepharitis
* Dry Eye Syndrome
* Styes
* Eyelid Cysts (Meibomian cysts know as chalazion, pronounced Ka-lazy-on)
* Contact Lens Dry Eye
* Corneal Laser Dry Eye
* Seborrhoeic dermatitis
* Rosacea

Symptoms which are relieved by EyeBag treatment are:

* Grittiness
* Tiredness
* Redness
* Bleary Vision
* Burning Discomfort
* Foreign body sensation (feels like there's something in the eye)
* Dry eye
* Eye irritation

Eyelid warming using the EyeBag is often used at the same time as artificial tears and dry eye gels and ointments. If you are a contact lens wearer you should discuss your situation with your contact lens practitioner who will advise you how best to use your EyeBag.

  What Does It Do?

The heated EyeBag when applied to the upper face so that the bridge of the nose and both the upper and lower eyelids are covered, will release warmth; stimulating the normal sebaceous oily secretions from the meibomian glands and offering instant comfort.

Once the EyeBag is removed you will need to follow the EyeLid Massage Technique which used over several days will dramatically improve the symptoms.

  What Is The Eyelid Massage Technique?

After each individual use of the EyeBag, it is necessary to follow the EyeLid Massage Technique to obtain the very best results from the EyeBag.

1. In order to massage the eyelids you should use the index finger or middle finger and sweep the pad of that finger from the inner corner of the eye along the eyelid to the outer corner of the eye.

2. You should start with the upper lid an put the finger pad in the corner of the eye next to the nose, just resting on the eyelid above the lashes for the upper lid and below the lashes for the lower lid, then sweep the finger gently but firmly along the eyelid to the outer end.

3. Repeat this with the lower lid, placing the pad of the finger just below the lashes in the corner of the eye and sweeping outwards towards the temple. This sweeping massage action can be repeated 5 to 10 times over about 30 seconds immediately following the warming.

4. It is important to do this massaging technique as described and neither to be too gentle with the massage nor too firm. It should be relatively comfortable and you should not be pressing hard enough to actually hurt your eyeball under the closed lids. The massaging should always take place with the eyes shut.

5. If you are going to carry out several 5 minute treatment cycles consecutively, place the EyeBag back in the microwave and warm it for a further 30 seconds whilst massaging the eyelids thoroughly and then reapply the warm EyeBag for a further 5 minutes and massage again at the end of that time. A treatment cycle is deemed to be the warming of the EyeBag, the 5 minutes with the EyeBag in place, moulded to fit on the face over the closed eyelids, followed by 30 seconds of massaging of the eyelids.

  What Conditions Is It Used For?

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is a very common problem. It is a feature of many Dry Eye Syndromes and a major cause of Blepharitis. Whenever the Meibomian glands are dysfunctional, the oily secretion that they normally produce, (known as meibom) becomes more greasy and viscous. The melting point of the oil goes up to about 39 degrees Centigrade, so the secretions are semisolid. The meibomian oil cannot flow onto the eyelid margins and fails to 'lubricate the blink'. These conditions lead to an awareness of the eyes with burning gritty discomfort, and all the usual symptoms such as; feeling there is something in the eye, scratchy sore eyes, bleary vision lasting a few moments and which clears with repeated blinking, soreness when reading so that you feel unable to read for more than 10 or 15 minutes without resting the eyes. All of these symptoms improve with regular EyeBag use.

Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, Contact Lens Practitioners, GPs, Nurses and other health professionals, frequently recommend the application of regular warm compresses to melt the solidified meibomian secretions. Usually the warm compresses are applied twice daily. The EyeBag maintains a temperature of over 40 degrees C. for 8 minutes. Hot wet flannel treatment is less effective as the flannel cools rapidly and the Meibomian secretions are not softened adequately.

Conditions which usually benefit from regular twice daily EyeBag treatment are:

* Blepharitis
* Dry Eye Syndrome
* Styes

* Eyelid Cysts (Meibomian cysts know as chalazion, pronounced Ka-lazy-on, which is the Greek word for a hailstone) * Contact Lens Dry Eye
* Corneal Laser Dry Eye
* Seborrhoeic dermatitis
* Rosacea

  What Are The Risks?

The EyeBag should not be used if the skin around the eyes is broken or bleeding.

If you have a known hypersensitivity to flax, linseed or any of the other constituents of the EyeBag, do not use.

In the event of increased eye irritation or itchiness, cease use of the EyeBag.

  What If I Wear Contact Lenses?

You must remove your contact lenses before using the EyeBag. Then follow the instructions contained in the leaflet accompanying your EyeBag.

  What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

When the eyelid glands and the eyes and eyelids are all working normally, then you are not aware of your eyes. When the normal function of the eyelids is disturbed, then symptoms arise which cause you to be aware of your eyes on a daily, hourly or even minute by minute basis. When your eyes are constantly uncomfortable it is very difficult to concentrate on anything else.

When the eyelid gland secretions become viscous, they cause plugging of the gland orifices and these plugs of solidified secretion prevent the normal sebaceous oily secretion from oozing out onto the free eyelid margins and prevent the lubricating action on the eye surface.

The meibomian glands run vertically in the eyelids, both upper and lower eyelids and there are about 25-30 openings (orifices) on the edge of both upper and lower eyelids.

Meibomian gland dysfunction results in several symptoms. The main symptom is one of awareness of the eyes tending to occur with grittiness or foreign body sensation. Sometimes there are feelings of burning and soreness of the eyelid edges. These symptoms can all occur together at the same time or at different times for different individuals.

  What is the EyeBag made of?

The EyeBag is made of silver silk one side and matt black suedex the other. It is filled with flax seeds (also referred to as linseed).

Flax has been chosen because of the size, shape and density of the seeds and also because of the long history of its use as a natural medicinal treatment. Its shape and size means that it is heavy enough to settle down and conform to the shape of different faces and it retains the warmth well. It does not give off an unpleasant odour when warmed in the microwave. There is no aromatic or herb fragrance added to the EyeBag. This should minimise any sensitivity or allergic irritation of the eyelids of eyes.
