Why

Why do I need an EyeBag?

We know that warming the closed eyelids can relieve many types of ocular discomfort. The standard advice used to be to run a basin of hot water and use a face cloth or flannel as a warm compress. Unfortunately, this is a real nuisance and not very effective, so people just didn’t do it. A treatment that nobody takes is bound to be useless. I realised that people needed a device that was pleasant, effective, convenient and cheap, so that they would use it on a daily basis.

Why have I got Dry Eye Syndrome?

Most patients with Dry Eye Syndrome have a condition known as Evaporative Dry Eye and the commonest cause of evaporative dry eye is dysfunction of the oil producing glands in the eyelid edges. These tarsal glands are known as Meibomian glands and when they fail to ‘lubricate the blink’ adequately the condition is known as Meibomian glands Dysfunction or MGD. Patients with MGD have a ‘poor quality tear film’ which leads to increased evaporation of the normal tears which in turn causes the symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome.   Why have I got MGD – Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

We don’t know!

Why do I get a chalazion from time to time?

It happens!

  Why have I got blepharitis?

We don’t know!

Why is the EyeBag better than a warm flannel?

People actually use it. It stays warm for 8 to 10 minutes. The treatment is pleasant. Microwaving the EyeBag before use kills bacteria. Warm face flannels are not hygienic.

Why isn’t the EyeBag available on an NHS prescription?

The EyeBag is available on a private prescription in Great Britain. It is registered as a class 1 medical device with the MHRA – a UK regulatory Authority. It may become available for GPs to prescribe on the NHS in due course.

Why can’t I get an EyeBag from my local hospital eye clinic?

You can. The NHS Supply Chain has had a contract to supply EyeBags to hospitals and eye clinics in England since November 2007. It is up to your local hospital whether they stock them or not ¬– you can ask. The Hospital eye departments can provide patients with an EyeBag in just the same way that other departments provide tubegrip bandages, catheters, wrist splints, soft collars or punctum plugs. These medical devices are not prescribed by the doctor, but are provided free to the patient when required.

Why can’t I get an EyeBag from my local optician?

You can. Any optician can stock the EyeBag. Your own optician, optometrist, contact lens practitioner, or other eye care professional can simply order EyeBags wholesale. They can obtain EyeBags either directly from us at the EyeBag Company, or through one of our wholesalers, Mid-optic or three sixty.
